All About Supervision

Why supervision is necessary

Regular clinical supervision is an essential part of a mental health professional’s successful practice.

There are many reasons to engage in clinical supervision. Not only is it a requirement to become a licensed practitioner, it may also be carried out as part of career-long professional development, to change one’s area of practice, or as remediation required by regulatory colleges.

However, beyond being a regulatory requirement, supervision also helps new practitioners learn on the job skills that cannot be taught in school. Supervision, especially in psychotherapy, helps new graduates develop entry to practice competencies. It is also a means to gain insight on professional consultations and demonstrate how one's personal context can affect the therapeutic relationship.

This is why OAMHP's Standard of Practice 11 states that OAMHP expects all members to engage in clinical supervision.

Why Supervision: The Evolution of Practice?

Clinical supervision is a distinct professional practice that requires specific training, knowledge, and skills separate from those required to be a mental health professional.

Whether you’re a student looking for a supervisor as part of your criteria to graduate – or an established psychotherapist looking to help a student launch their career – the Supervision: The Evolution of Practice event is designed to help you learn the elements of best practices for supervision, and strategies for finding a good placement.

You’ll leave the event knowing that you are part of a community of peers and colleagues who can point you in the right direction.

About the day’s schedule:

  • An emphasis on networking and gathering events to allow attendees to engage with and learn from each other
  • Learning activities that place attendees in similar groups based on their knowledge level and personal experience with clinical supervision
  • Focus on allowing attendees to share and be the “expert”
  • Pointing you to people and resources within OAMHP that will develop your skills further, such as OAMHP’s Validated Supervisor program.

Why “evolution of practice”?

For OAMHP, Supervision: The Evolution of Practice is not just a one day event. The event is just the start of an ongoing opportunity to continue and evolve the conversation about supervision.  Some have spent time and effort to learn and apply their learning, others are beginning the collection of information around what it all means.  We are all learning from each other - no matter what our level of supervisory knowledge.

We encourage you to contribute to this ongoing learning experience: whether in the form of experience, advice or resources and tools. We can all learn from, and teach each other.

Sharing and exchanging ideas and knowledge, is what being part of a member with a professional association is all about!  Come be part of the dialogue.

About OAMHP’s Validated Supervisor program

The Validated Supervisor program is a designation for OAMHP Certified members to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in the clinical supervision of mental health professionals.

This designation promotes competence and professionalism of clinical supervisors. In turn, it strengthens our members’ competencies and ensures that supervision is a valuable process for both supervisors and supervisees.

OAMHP is currently the only Ontario organization that formally validates supervisors. While the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) provides criteria to assess a mental health professional’s capability to provide professional supervision, the College itself does not assess or evaluate supervisors.
